Name
"Starspray" is the translation of the elvish name Elwing.
I've always loved the deeply romantic story by J.R.R.Tolkien.
Elwing's story is told in the Silmarillion. She was the daughter of
Dior (the son of Beren and Lúthien) and Nimloth and was born in Ossiriand.
She lost her parents, as well as her brothers Eluréd and Elúrin, in the
attack on Doriath, but escaped to the Havens of Sirion, bringing with her
the Silmaril. She married Earendil who was lord of the people that dwelt
by the mouths of the Sirion River, and they had two sons: Elrond and Elros.
While Eärendil was away at sea, the remaining sons of Feanor descended upon
the Havens, killing many Elves. Rather than be captured, Elwing cast herself
into the sea with the Silmaril upon her breast. But Ulmo changed her into
a great white bird, in which form she found her husband. Lacking a home
to return to, they instead went together west to Aman. The Valar gave her
the choice of kindred just as for her husband and sons, and she elected to be
with the Elves and live in the Blessed Realm. But instead of traveling
with Eärendil and the Silmaril on his nightly sky-voyages, she lived in
a white tower next to the Sundering Seas, conversing with the seabirds
and flying among them, and some have seen her soaring through the air to meet
the Vingilot on its return from its many voyages through the skies
above Arda and the starless voids as the Morning Star.
