Shannon's Companions

Helping Those That Can't Help Themselves

We are a 501(c)3 non profit organization

and are a subsidiary of Halfway Home

Alternative Therapies,NFP.  We are a

licensed animal shelter and horse rescue

with the state of Illinois.  We provide

a loving and caring environment for

rescued, surrendered, abandoned and

abused horses and dogs until they are

adopted.

We are not people looking for glory.

We are not people with lots of money

in need of a hobby. We are here to help

those in need and can really see from the

grassroots level what is needed.  We fully

believe in combining efforts with

other organizations that have the same

goals. We welcome businesses to also partner

with us to help make a difference.  We are

as grassroots as they come!  Expenses come

out of our pockets with scattered donations

throughout the year and the occasional small

grant to help out.  We have goals of eventually

becoming self sufficient.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

The Human-Animal Bond is the dynamic relationship between people and animals in that each influences the psychological and physiological state of the other. Human-animal interaction has profound physiological consequences. People, in the contact with animals experience a decrease in blood pressure, reduced anxiety, and a general feeling of well being. By observing the behavior of animals, children learn to be more nurturing and perhaps better parents to their own children. The therapeutic value of animals for socially isolated individuals in nursing homes, hospitals, hospices, and prisons has been documented. People in the presence of animals are often perceived to be more happy and healthy.

The Animal Rescue Site

ABOUT OUR RESCUE

Our rescue leases approximately 80 acres of pasture.  We have one large barn, a large machine shed, a large loafing shed at the trails and several small outbuildings/run ins.    There are about 20 acres of wooded trails.  We have a special enclosure for Nora, the blind mare, where she is safe and has her own stall to go in and out of.   We are working on setting up more stalls in the barn for horses that need extra TLC or are being treated.  Last summer we completed our 100'X 250' outdoor arena with the help of several volunteers.  It took us three years but we finally got it finished.  In the future we are hoping to raise enough money for an indoor arena so that we can hold events, riding lessons and be able to train the horses in the cold and rainy months.

Originally an old family farm, we have put in 4 years of hard work cleaning up old farm equipment, revamping old buildings and trimming back all the overgrowth of vegetation.  We still have lots of work ahead of us.  The tractor died last spring so we have had to do everything by hand or with small hand operated machinery.  Keeping this many acres trimmed up is quite a chore to say the least.

TRAIL RIDING

We offer low cost trail rides from May 1st until November 1st every year.  We only charge $10-$15 per person, depending on whether you get a guided or unguided ride.  These special prices are set up so that EVERYONE can afford to go horseback riding.  Other places usually charge $30 or more.  The ride is approximately 45 minutes to an hour.  We have several acres of very relaxing wooded trails.  If your child is too young to go on a trail ride we also offer pony leads on the trails for $5.  We do have special group rates for schools, churches, clubs, etc...  All proceeds from the riding stable help support the rescue horses!

RIDING LESSONS

In the summer months we also offer riding lessons.  Lessons are given by Debra, who is a certified riding instructor.  She offers low cost packages.  Ask us for details.
